“Cycle II: Investigative Business Journalism”

A free one-day business journalism workshop will be held on Wednesday, June 15, 2005, in Kansas City, Mo. It is open not only to business journalists, but to journalists covering other beats who wish to learn more about business.

The “Investigative Business Journalism” program covers critical areas such as intermediate financials, accounting red flags and unearthing documents.

James Steele, Editor-at-Large for Time Inc., who as half of the Barlett and Steele investigative reporting team has won numerous awards that include two Pulitzer Prizes; Michelle Leder, editor of the Footnoted.org financial Web site; and David Herzog, academic advisor at the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting on behalf of the Investigative Reporters & Editors, will be the presenters.

This free workshop is sponsored by the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism at the American Press Institute in Reston, Va., and hosted by The Kansas City Star. The workshop will be held at The Kansas City Star annex, 215 E. 18 th Street, Kansas City, Mo. 64108.

For further questions, contact Lori Tait, Project Manager, at 703.715.3332 or LTait@americanpressinstitute.org.

This is the second of three single-day workshops to be held in the Kansas City area during 2005. The third on “Action Business Journalism: Covering the Company from Top to Bottom” will be held on Oct. 19. Those who attend all three will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Reynolds Center.

“Our investigative business journalism workshops have been very popular around the country,” said Andrew Leckey, director of the Reynolds Center at API. “Journalists increasingly want to go deeper in their coverage of companies to get the true picture of the finances that affect shareholders, employees and readers.”

The Reynolds Center at API is funded by a grant from the Las Vegas, Nevada-based Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. It will hold 50 one-day workshops around the country and 10 business journalism online seminars in 2005 and continues to provide daily updates on BusinessJournalism.org – all specifically for business journalists.
