A free one-day business journalism workshop will be held on Friday, September 12, 2008 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It is open not only to business journalists, but to journalists covering other beats who wish to learn more about business.

The "Private Companies: Reporting, Research and Multimedia Coverage" program will cover critical areas such as private company financials and writing effective private company stories during the morning sessions. A national research report on Private and Minority Business Coverage will be presented over the lunch hour. Multimedia storytelling is the focus of the afternoon, including an exercise in reporting effectively online about private companies.

Presenters will be Chris Roush, associate business journalism professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and former BusinessWeek reporter, and Anita Malik, deputy director of the Reynolds Center.

This workshop is sponsored by the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism and hosted by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. The workshop will be held at 200 E Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301.

We also encourage you to learn more about the Reynolds Center, its various programs and business coverage through this site, which is updated daily. For further questions, contact Senior Program Coordinator Jackie Sponberg at 480.727.9189.

"More than 7,000 journalists nationwide have attended Reynolds Center workshops, all seeking to improve their skills," said Andrew Leckey, director of the Reynolds Center. "Private companies and multimedia coverage are two of the hottest areas in financial coverage and we’re offering this opportunity for journalists to raise their effectiveness in both.”

The Reynolds Center is funded by a grant from the Las Vegas, Nevada-based Donald W. Reynolds Foundation.

Please do not register unless you are sincere about attending and have been given authorization by your editor to do so. Since our workshops are often oversubscribed, no-shows keep other potential registrants from attending and waste food purchased for morning and lunch meals. Registration will close at noon on ONE WEEK PRIOR to the workshop date.
